MRA stop snurken

MRA (SLEEP APNOEA)

A common sleep disorder is snoring. The sound is caused by the inhaled air vibrating the mucous membrane of the pharynx, such as the soft palate and the uvula. Snoring is about as common in men as it is in women. Obesity, blockage of the nasal and forehead cavities, alcohol consumption and smoking are some of the culprits, but hereditary traits can also play a part. The noise is sometimes so intense that a partner, roommate and even neighbours can be disturbed by it. The snorer themselves can also wake up from the discomfort. Snoring occurs at all ages, but increases with age. When you get older, the snoring sound often gets louder. Frequent and loud snoring is often an indication that apnoea is present.

Apnoea  (OSA)

Apnoea is often referred to as Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA). Apnoea is an interruption of the air flow of at least ten seconds, resulting in a reduction in the oxygen level in the blood. For people who snore with apnoea, relaxation of the tongue and jaw muscles during sleep causes the pharynx to become so narrow that it creates a blockage in the airway.

OSA is present when, at night, someone:

  • Has a respiratory arrest of at least ten seconds, more than five times per hour
  • and is also sleepy or tired during the day
  • and there is also no other reason for the severe daytime sleepiness or fatigue.

It is important to treat OSA. If it goes untreated, you may experience headaches and loss of concentration and memory in addition to daytime fatigue. Lack of oxygen at night puts you at risk of multiple health problems, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease.

Dentist Neuteboom has been an NVTS accredited dentist sleep doctor since 2010.  If there is sleep apnoea (OSAS) present, the MRA will be covered by your health insurer through the basic insurance under certain conditions.
